Montana Real Estate License Requirements

In Montana, exams, licensing, and continuing education for real estate agents are governed by the Montana Department of Commerce.

There are two basic real estate licenses in Montana, a salesperson's license and a broker's license. Generally, a salesperson's license allows the holder to sell real estate only under the auspices of a licensed broker. (Salesperson's licenses are generally what people refer to when they say they have a real estate license.)

Real Estate Salesperson's License

  • Licensing Fees:
    $175.00 if Licensed in an Even Year
    $87.50 if Licensed in an Odd Year
    $35.00 Recovery Account (one time fee)
  • Education Requirements:
    High school graduation or equivalent;
    60 Hours of additional pre-licensing instruction from a school and instructor approved by the Board.
  • Experience Requirements:
    None
  • Examination Information:
    Pass the Montana Real Estate Examination with a score of 80% or better the uniform and 70% or better on the state portion.
  • Other Special License Requirements:
    Must be 18 years of age or older
Sample Salesperson Exam

Real Estate Broker's License

  • Licensing Fees:
    $200.00 if Licensed in an Even Year
    $100.00 if Licensed in an Odd Year
    $35.00 Recovery Account (one time fee)
  • Education Requirements:
    High school graduation or equivalent;
    60 Hours of additional pre-licensing instruction from a school and instructor approved by the Board.
  • Experience Requirements:
    Two years as a licensed Salesperson
  • Completion of the following activity criteria within 3 years of the date of application:
    Minimum of 30 residential real estate transaction
    Or
    Minimum of 10 commercial, agricultural or farm and ranch real estate transactions
  • Examination Information:
    Pass the Montana Real Estate Examination with a score of 80% or better the uniform and 70% or better on the state portion.
  • Continuing Education Requirements:
    12 hours annually
  • Other Special License Requirements:
    Must be 18 years of age or older
